How Water Quality Affects Social Minorities

How Water Quality Affects Social Minorities

Poor water quality affects all living things. Contaminated water directly harms the environment, wildlife, human health, and the economy. We need to recognize that modern human activities threaten our already limited supply of fresh water. Poor water quality is more likely to impact low income communities. These neighborhoods are often the target sites for agricultural land use and poor infrastructure, leading to water contamination. Consistent testing and enforced water regulations can prevent contaminated water from reaching the drinking glass. However, this is deeper than sample gathering. We must address the cycles of injustice towards social minorities by informing the public and decision makers about their personal impacts on water. Change will not occur unless we learn to care for our neighbors and understand our role in the community.
