Veteran Suicide

Invisible Battles: The Veteran Suicide Crisis

Invisible Battles highlights the silent health struggle many U.S. veterans face after service. While physical wounds often heal, invisible ones (PTSD, deployment trauma, isolation, and transition difficulties) persist, fueling a silent crisis. The VA’s 2025 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report shows 6,398 veterans died by suicide in 2023, averaging 17.5 per day. Since 2001, over 140,000 veterans have been lost to suicide – far exceeding combat deaths in recent conflicts. Many fight alone due to limited care access, or reluctance to seek help; 61% of recent veteran suicides had no prior VA health engagement. Firearms remain a leading method, amplifying lethality. Urgent action is needed: expanded mental health resources, community support, and early intervention. No veteran should face these invisible battles alone – awareness, empathy, and proactive support can save lives.
