Overconsumption
The Space Between Pasture and Plate
Industrial farming now produces nearly 99% of farmed animals, prioritizing efficiency and low cost. That scale has reshaped how animals are raised, often relying on extreme confinement and routine procedures that limit natural behaviors and reduce quality of life. Practices such as intensive caging, early separation, and physical alterations without pain relief are built into the system to maximize output. Yet the systems respond to demand. Consumers have meaningful ways to influence change; by reading food labels carefully, supporting small and higher-welfare farms, reducing consumption, and engaging in policy efforts that promote humane standards. Each purchasing decision and civic action signals what kind of agriculture we value. When awareness meets intentional choice, the gap between production and compassion begins to close.
