The Cost of Energy in Pennsylvania
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has become a major source of energy in the United States, but it remains highly controversial due to its environmental and health impacts. Communities near drilling sites often raise concerns about groundwater contamination, air pollution, methane emissions, and heavy industrial drilling activity brought into residential areas. Large amounts of water are required, and wastewater disposal can pose additional environmental risks. Studies have linked living near fracking wells to increased respiratory issues and potential health concerns. Beyond environmental effects, fracking can also influence property values and create economic instability in boom-and-bust drilling regions. While fracking does bring jobs, many question whether the long-term environmental and public health costs outweigh the short-term economic benefits.
