Violence in Media & its Effects on Youth
Violence in media, including television, video games, and social media, has become a prominent issue with a significant negative impact for children and youth. Exposure to violent media can desensitize young people, making them less empathetic toward real-world violence. Research suggests that exposure to media violence can normalize aggressive behavior, leading to an increased likelihood of youth engaging in violence themselves. It can also distort perceptions of reality, making young people more fearful or anxious. As children and teenagers are easily influenced, violence in media can also shape their beliefs about conflict resolution, relationships, and self-esteem. Addressing this issue requires responsible media production, better parental guidance, and education about the harms of violence in media to protect vulnerable young audiences.
