Police and Mental Healthcare Professionals as Co-Responders
Protect and Serve?
Mental health awareness has been at an all time high within the past few years. Conditions of the mind have become more widely accepted and brought up in conversations more often. We teach those with mental illness to advocate for themselves and seek out the care they need. But why do we neglect a pressing matter for those experiencing a mental health emergency? For people faced with a severe mental health crisis, 911 is sometimes seen as the only solution. Police are often the first and only ones to respond to these calls, with arrest being the most frequent outcome. With mental healthcare professionals partnering with police, these people can get the adequate care they seek and reduce the likelihood of becoming repeat callers.
