How Nightlife and Social Media Stigmatize Substance Abuse

In today’s digital age, nightlife and social media play a powerful role in shaping perceptions of substance use. Party culture often glamorizes drug and alcohol consumption, presenting it as a symbol of status, and escapism. At the same time, individuals struggling with addiction face harsh stigma, reduced to cautionary tales rather than people in need of support. Viral Vices examines this contradiction—how the same behaviors celebrated in one context are condemned in another. Through visual storytelling, this project challenges the audience to question how social media aesthetics and nightlife culture influence public attitudes toward substance abuse, addiction, and recovery.
