Book Banning
An Intellectual Warfare
Book bans occur when a title is completely removed from a curriculum or collection, whether in schools or public libraries. They are often initiated by organized groups or movements attempting to censor, or suppress, ideas and information from adolescents. Bans tend to follow recurring themes, specifically targeting marginalized communities. Despite arguments that banning certain books will protect young adults, studies have found that efforts to shield adolescents from sensitive material may actually be counterproductive. Students need the opportunity to engage in a variety of diverse texts in order to develop social and emotional learning, media literacy, and an understanding of diverse worldviews. It is our responsibility to fight back and ensure equal access to information for everyone.
