Declining Native Hawaiian Bird Populations
A Fading Song: The Decline of Native Hawaiian Forest Birds
The decline of Native Hawaiian bird populations has been devastating to Hawaiʻi’s ecosystem for decades. These unique forest birds are not found anywhere else on Earth, yet many species have been lost due to habitat destruction, invasive species, and climate change. A large factor in population decreases are rising temperatures due to climate change, allowing mosquitoes carrying avian-malaria to reach higher elevation forests that are home to these birds. Hawaiʻi’s forests rely on these birds for pollination and seed dispersal and are suffering because of these declines. Organizations are actively fighting these losses, but more support is needed to create a change. If we fail to act now, we will lose a crucial aspect to Hawaiʻi’s cultural and ecological identity.
