Extreme Heat and Climate Change

Heat-Related Illnesses and Deaths Caused by Climate Change

Illness and death due to extreme heat events caused by climate change has become one of the most dangerous public health threats in the United States. One of the main drivers of this issue includes climate change, which is causing a rise in frequency and intensity of extreme heat events. Compounded by this is the urban heat island effect which traps and retains heat in dense urban areas. Many of these areas are lacking resources for the public such as providing cooling centers and creating affordability of electricity to run air conditioning. Lack of public awareness can also impact the population, in particular demographics like the unhoused, elderly, and outdoor workers.Through awareness, knowledge, and advocacy we can prevent many cases of illness and death caused by extreme heat.
