Black Maternal Mortality

The Preventable: Neglect in Care

Black maternal mortality in the United States is a preventable crisis rooted in systemic inequalities and gaps in care. Black women are significantly more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts, not because of biology, but because of delayed diagnoses, dismissed pain, inadequate treatment, and structural racism within healthcare systems. Many of these deaths occur during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period and could be avoided with equitable, attentive, and respectful care. Addressing this crisis requires accountability, policy reform, and commitment to valuing Black mothers’ lives before, during, and after birth.
