Book Banning

The Censorship of Queer Literature

Book banning has skyrocketed over the past five years, and no group is more affected by this than the authors and readers of Queer literature. With increased political pressure from local governments, collections of these books have been unfairly challenged by those in power. More than 22,000 books have been challenged or outright banned across the United States, threatening the freedoms of writers and readers throughout the country.

The removal of these books is a direct threat to self-expression and an active erasure of generations of literary contributions. These books are not just stories to the young people of our day and age – they are a lifeline to stories that allow them to feel heard, understood, and represented.
