Voter Suppression

Silenced Voices: Voter Suppression in the US

Voter suppression is any legal measure or strategy to prevent or discourage certain Americans from registering to vote or casting their ballot. Deeply rooted in US history but also includes modern tactics like restrictive voting laws, poll place reduction, voter roll purges, gerrymandering, and other forms of intimidation and misinformation.Voter suppression has historically targeted black communities and it continues to disproportionately affect people of color. Over the last decade states have imposed harsher barriers to voting which have kept millions of eligible voters away from the polls. These undemocratic practices undermine everyone’s democracy and right to vote.
