Social Media Censorship

Hidden in Plain Sight: Social Media Censorship

Social media censorship is the suppression of information, speech, or expression over various topics on social media platforms. This often comes up in one of two ways: referring to general censorship of hate speech to protect its users, or purposeful removal by larger entities to suppress opposition or control the narrative. Censorship like this causes a limitation on free speech, creates a lack of diverse viewpoints, and discourages public debate. A community on social media allows for people to see perspectives different from their own. This helps to create empathy and empowers marginalized voices. Social media censorship can deter people from standing up against negative forces harming them and the people around them and ultimately cause them harm.
