The Cost of Canine Purebreeding
Breed Standards: Do They Preserve or Destroy?
Have you ever wondered why your favorite dog breed looks the way that it does? Originally, each breed’s physical characteristics served a practical purpose such as hunting, guarding, or herding. As society shifted away from needing dogs to fulfill these roles, breeders began prioritizing form over function. The rise of conformation shows and Kennel Club breed standards encouraged the pursuit of exotic physical traits that compromise the health of the resulting dogs. Efforts to preserve historic breeds have also resulted in a severe inbreeding crisis, increasing the prevalence of life-threatening health conditions across more than 200 breeds. To address this growing health crisis, we must reform current breed standards and pure-breeding practices to prioritize health over aesthetics – or we may destroy the same breeds we were trying to protect.
