Dopamine Addiction & Social Media
The Rewiring of your Brain: Happening Now
Frequent social media use alters dopamine pathways, a critical component in reward processing, fostering strong dependency. Furthermore, studies suggest social media use increases emotional sensitivity and compromises decision-making abilities. The shares, likes and comments on these platforms trigger the brain’s reward center, resulting in a high similar to the one people feel when gambling or using drugs. Our devices encourage frequent multitasking, which can impair our ability to focus. Reliance on social media for mood management can interfere with our natural ability to regulate emotion and has been linked to increased rates of anxiety and depression. Constant digital stimulation keeps us from boredom and daydreaming, crucial for creative thinking and problem-solving. And the rapid consumption of content can interfere with our ability to form lasting memories and consolidate information.
